What Is Passivhaus — And Why Do We Love It So Much?

We’ve been talking a lot lately about the incredible THRIVE Passivhaus Conference. It was inspiring to connect with so many others in the space and see how far the movement has come. So we thought it might be a good time to go back to basics and explain a bit more about what Passive House actually is — especially for those who are new to the term or wondering why we’re so passionate about it.
Passive House: What It Is — And What It Isn’t
First things first: Passive House is not a brand. It’s not a trademark, and it’s not owned by any one company. It’s an open-source building standard — a scientifically backed and internationally recognised method for designing and constructing some of the most energy-efficient buildings in the world.
Passive House (or Passivhaus, as it originated in Germany) is a concept that’s proven itself again and again in practice. It's data-driven, precise, and incredibly effective. Compared to typical homes, Passive House buildings can save up to 90% of heating energy, and up to 75% more than homes that merely meet current building regulations.
But Passive House isn’t about one product or technique. It’s about designing holistically — considering everything from insulation and glazing, to ventilation, hot water, and electrical supply — to create buildings that require very little energy to run, while maintaining exceptional comfort and air quality.
The Five Core Principles of Passive House
Every certified Passive House is designed around five key principles:
- High levels of thermal insulation
- Elimination of thermal bridges
- Triple-glazed, thermally broken windows
- An airtight building envelope
- Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)
These are simple ideas, but when applied together — using precise Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) modelling — they result in buildings that stay warm in winter, cool in summer, and maintain consistently fresh indoor air without relying on conventional heating and cooling systems.

A Passive House often looks just like any other home. The difference is what’s happening inside the walls (and through the windows, floors, ceilings, and roof).
You’ll find insulation that wraps around the entire building like a warm jumper. Windows that bring in warmth in winter but reflect heat in summer. Smart ventilation that keeps air fresh without losing heat. And a building envelope so airtight, it needs to be tested with a blower door to confirm it meets the stringent requirements.
