A Light-Filled, Sustainable Family Hideaway
Designed by Simone prior to joining reimagined habitat
Nestled within the leafy, tree-lined streets of Macleod, this thoughtfully upgraded family home has been transformed into a 7-Star sustainable retreat. What began as a modest brick veneer house has become a bright, comfortable, and quietly efficient sanctuary — thanks to a carefully designed extension built using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) and a comprehensive deep retrofit.
The addition of a SIPs-constructed second storey provides exceptional thermal performance, airtightness, and construction efficiency, dramatically improving the home’s year-round comfort while keeping energy use impressively low. Inside the existing structure, insulation was retrofitted throughout, and high-performing double glazing was installed to reduce heat loss and maintain stable indoor temperatures through every season.
A Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system completes the high-performance envelope, ensuring continuous fresh, filtered air and a healthier indoor environment for the whole family — one of the key ingredients in achieving true comfort and long-term wellbeing.
The living spaces are filled with beautiful natural light, supporting passive solar performance and creating a warm and uplifting atmosphere. At the heart of the home, an entertainer’s kitchen features charming café windows that open directly to a secluded outdoor area, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor living and making it the perfect spot for shared meals, gatherings, and slow weekend mornings.
This renovation shows just how transformative performance-driven design can be — elevating an existing home into a modern, energy-efficient haven without sacrificing charm, flow, or functionality.
