Blackburn Double-Storey Extension

Modern Japanese Calm for Multigenerational Living

Designed by Simone prior to joining reimagined habitat

This modest weatherboard home in Blackburn had long outgrown its ability to support the needs of a warm, close-knit multigenerational family. The owners loved their neighbourhood and were deeply committed to creating an energy-efficient, adaptable home that would evolve with them for many years to come. Their vision: a modern Japanese-inspired extension that honoured the character of the original house while bringing in light, warmth and contemporary functionality.

The result is a beautifully balanced home that feels serene, spacious, and thoughtfully connected — a home that supports three generations under one roof.

The new double-storey extension introduces a generous, light-filled kitchen, living, and dining space, anchored by a polished concrete slab for thermal stability and clean modern lines. Large windows and soft, natural finishes bring a sense of calm, while a walk-in pantry and downstairs laundry add practicality for a busy household.

Upstairs, three bright bedrooms and a central bathroom create a peaceful retreat for the younger generation, carefully positioned to allow both privacy and connection.

The design places strong emphasis on flexible multigenerational living. The existing part of the home was reconfigured to create a separate, comfortable suite for the family’s parent — including a refreshed master bedroom, bathroom, and the addition of a small kitchen, dining area, lounge, and bedroom. This thoughtful layout allows independent living while maintaining closeness and support.

Energy efficiency sits at the heart of the project, ensuring year-round comfort with minimal energy use. The extension complements the original façade, blending modern Japanese inspiration with the warmth and character of the existing cottage — resulting in a home that feels both grounded and gently contemporary.

A calm, functional, beautifully efficient family home that now meets the needs of every generation — including the family’s much-loved furry companion.
