CHIFLEY SEMI

This energy efficient renovation in Canberra transformed an uncomfortable semi into a modern, high-performance family home.

This energy efficient renovation in Canberra transformed a poorly performing semi into a comfortable, modern and highly efficient family home with minimal structural intervention.

The project received a Commendation and placed second in the Chris Reardon Sustainable Building category at the BDAA National Design Awards, recognising the significant improvement in both liveability and building performance.

Originally, the home performed extremely poorly thermally, with the upstairs level becoming almost unusable during summer. Through careful planning and targeted upgrades, the renovation dramatically improved comfort, energy efficiency and functionality while modernising the interior spaces and opening up the layout.

Rather than undertaking a major rebuild, the design focused on making smarter use of the existing structure with minimal impact on the site and original building fabric. The result is a light-filled, contemporary home that feels significantly more comfortable and functional throughout the year.

The performance improvements were substantial. The home was transformed from a zero-rated dwelling into one of the highest-rated energy-efficient homes in Canberra. Following the renovation, the clients reported that they only needed to use their air conditioning twice during summer, while their energy bills reduced dramatically.

The project also demonstrated the long-term financial value of energy-efficient design. When the owners later relocated to Queensland for family reasons, the renovated home achieved a 17% premium compared to comparable unrenovated semis nearby — even when renovation costs were taken into account.

This Chifley renovation highlights how thoughtful, performance-focused upgrades can dramatically improve comfort, reduce energy use and increase long-term property value without requiring extensive structural changes.
