This energy efficient home renovation in Canberra transformed a dark and underused house into a warm, light-filled and highly functional family home.

LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE

This energy efficient home renovation transformed a dark, poorly insulated and disconnected house into a warm, light-filled and joyful family home designed for comfortable everyday living.

While the renovation addressed major issues with thermal comfort, layout and functionality, the project was also strongly inspired by the client’s love of sunshine yellow — bringing warmth, personality and optimism into the home.

Before the renovation, the house suffered from poor insulation, limited natural light and a series of small, disconnected spaces that were difficult to use effectively. Several rooms were rarely used, and the overall layout prevented the home from functioning well for everyday family life.

The transformation focused on improving both comfort and connection throughout the house. Insulation upgrades, improved windows and efficient heat pump systems dramatically improved year-round thermal comfort and energy performance, creating a home that now feels comfortable throughout all seasons.

A complete reworking of the internal layout allowed the kitchen to connect directly with the rear living spaces, transforming an area previously used only occasionally into the centre of everyday family life. Casual and formal dining zones were introduced, while a new open nook at the front of the house allows natural light to move more freely throughout the home.

The renovation significantly changed the atmosphere of the house, creating brighter, more welcoming and more functional spaces without losing warmth or personality.

Additional features throughout the home further personalise the design, including a dedicated library space created for the owner, who works as a school teacher.

This project remains one of our favourites — especially after the clients shared that they no longer feel the need to go on holidays because they simply love spending time at home.
